Late-June 2026 round-up: a City Council confidence vote, storm warnings, Pomorska Viaduct tram works, the S6 bypass, PLN 80m for oncology and a sailing summer on the Oder.
Late June in Szczecin is marked by local-government settlements, road disruptions and preparations for summer events on the Oder. Here is a round-up of the key stories.
City Council reviews the mayor
On Tuesday 24 June at 10:00 councillors meet for the 23rd City Council session. The agenda holds the year's biggest items: a debate on the 2025 State of the Municipality Report, a vote of confidence in the mayor (resolution 150/26) and the budget-discharge procedure for 2025. A day later, on 25 June at 11:00, the Regional Assembly of West Pomerania convenes in Darłowo. The city's 2026 budget has already been adopted, with an emphasis on education and investment.
Storms and heat
The weather is not letting up. On 19 June a first-level warning was issued for hailstorms, in force from 13:30 to 20:00, covering Szczecin and the Goleniów, Police and Stargard districts. Earlier, storms on 14 June brought up to 45 mm of rain and winds of 70 km/h, with nearly 500 fire-service callouts across the region. Heat warnings have also appeared, and a hydrological drought has been recorded in smaller rivers, the Ina and the Płonia.
Trams halt, the bypass takes shape
It will be a hard week for commuters. From 25 to 29 June the tram track on the Pomorska Viaduct is being rebuilt, and on 27 and 28 June tram traffic will be fully suspended, resuming on 29 June. The works, worth nearly 8 million zloty, are run by Stanled. That is not all. Lines 6, 70, 90 and 526 have also been altered since late January, owing to the dismantling of the Castle Route ramps.
On the bigger-investment front, contractors for three sections of the Western Szczecin Bypass on the S6 were selected in autumn 2025. The route runs almost 49 km, with the costliest tunnel variant priced above 5.3 billion zloty. Contracts are not yet signed, and the road is not expected before roughly 2033. Meanwhile the Szczecin Metropolitan Railway is delayed again. Line 406 to Police will miss its planned date, with a realistic start around 2027.
80 million zloty for cancer care
Good news from healthcare. The Regional Hospital in Szczecin has secured about 80 million zloty from the National Recovery Plan for oncology, with the whole SOLO II project worth close to 96 million. The money will fund the rebuild of building A on Arkońska Street, new pathomorphology in Zdunowo and X-ray equipment. Completion is planned for mid-2026.
Tall ships instead of fireworks
Sailing will dominate the summer. This year's Tall Ships Races take place on the North Sea, from 24 June to 2 August, so Szczecin is not a host port this time. The city is represented, however, by the Dar Szczecina, sailing in two legs: from 24 June to 13 July and from 13 July to 1 August.
The main sailing event in the city itself will be the Żagle 2026 festival, set for 14, 15 and 16 August at Wały Chrobrego and Łasztownia. More than 30 vessels are expected, among them the Abel Tasman, Baltic Beauty and the historic icebreaker Stettin.
For the nostalgic: there will be no Pyromagic pyrotechnics festival this year. The event ended with its 2019 edition and has not returned to the calendar.
Football fans, meanwhile, are counting down to the new season. The 2026/27 Ekstraklasa starts on 24 July, and Pogoń Szczecin will open at home with a marquee match against Legia Warsaw.
Finally, from cultural life: the former school at 14 Wielkopolska Street is becoming the "Stara Szkoła ArtHub", a space for artists, NGOs and residents.
